Rather, the series functions like an<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">engine, driving the choreographer through idiosyncratic explorations, both exacting and unruly, around big, dizzying themes: race,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gender, sexuality, culture, history.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The individual dances in the series can be thought of as containers for these interlocking themes, and are distinguished, fittingly, by<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sizes. (There are five works so far; all stand alone but are most compelling when taken in as parts of a larger whole.) The latest iteration,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAntigone Sr.,\u201d gets the label Large \u2014 one it earns, and then some.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An ensemble for five men, including Mr. Harell, \u201cAntigone Sr.\u201d (yes, there is a Jr.) clocked in at just under two and a half intermissionless<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hours at its premiere on Wednesday night at New York Live Arts. The work\u2019s pacing was sometimes maddening and definitely stamina-<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">testing, but Mr. Harrell \u2014 who opened the show by announcing, among other things, that the stage was almost too small for this work \u2014<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wasn\u2019t going for efficiency.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe are taking our time,\u201d he declared somewhere in the middle, seated on a low, silver-fabric-covered platform with the miraculously<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">silken performer Thibault Lac.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The two men issued many \u201cWe are\u201d sentences, sometimes speaking in tandem, sometimes alone: \u201cVenus and Serena,\u201d \u201cMarc by Marc<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jacobs,\u201d \u201cMoMA and the Whitney,\u201d \u201cCage and Cunningham.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They ended as the sisters Antigone and Ismene, as Mr. Harrell returned to the ancient Greek tragedy he has increasingly deconstructed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">throughout the series to fashion his own fierce, ragged mythology \u2014 one pieced together from pop culture, theory, voguing, dance<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">history \u2014 and, always, the runway. However much in disarray, its denizens are fabulous.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The open stage (the set design is by Erik Flatmo) was carved up by four catwalklike strips of blue and gray paper and studded with three<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white squares: low daises that the men periodically occupied. Whether sitting in the aisles or among the audience or disappearing<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">backstage, the performers were frequently offstage, reappearing to a smartly eclectic soundtrack of songs in an ever-mutating collage of<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">outr\u00e9 headdresses, dresses, coats and indefinable concoctions, with items continually repurposed and remixed. (The dancers designed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the costumes in collaboration with Mr. Harrell, who also created the sound design with Robin Meier.)<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As they changed, their personas changed, morphing in ways subtle and not. Mr. Lac, who also performed in \u201cAntigone Jr.,\u201d was joined<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">by Stephen Thompson, Ondrej Vidlar and Rob Fordeyn (a marvel among five striking marvels), with Mr. Harrell serving as something of<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an outlier. He was sometimes the voluble and humorous M.C., sometimes a grief-stricken, almost creaturely figure.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As \u201cTwenty Looks\u201d has developed, this current of grief has coursed ever more strongly through the series. It has in the past felt more like<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a found object, something for Mr. Harrell to turn over in his mind as a way to approach and sometimes declaw lofty historical subjects.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The grief in \u201cAntigone Sr.\u201d feels wilder and darker, more intimately tied to personal demons. The show must go on (and on and on), even<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">when it staggers or grinds to a momentary halt, as when Jan Maertens\u2019s terrific lighting design, which sometimes suffuses the stage in a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rich haze, occasionally plunges the theater into complete or almost darkness.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes, here is the Judson Church legacy, and the Harlem ball legacy.
